Goodbye Sandkrug!
I've spent two wonderful weeks with the Frerichs family. I've lived in a town as small as San Antonio de Areco and I've really enjoyed to talk with its habitants. All of them were very nice and they showed a lot of patience when they saw that I could barely understand them. They were also very helpful when I told them that I would like to find a job here and live for a couple of years in this country. They gave me tips and recommended me tools and websites.
Susanne, Andreas and Steffen gave me the opportunity to experience the German culture every day long. At first I missed the big meals in the kitchen of the hotel in Essen, but I soon learned about the German “Abendbrot” and I really enjoyed the wide variety of cheese and bread which exists here. To eat earlier it is not bad, but it is still something it cannot get used to.
Susanne and Andreas were always very polite and we laughed together about my misunderstandings. They also spent a lot of their free time to show me the small towns which are around Sandkrug. In the case of Cloppenburg we visited an open museum in a day which was perfect to stay indoors. Andreas also went to events, he would never have gone, if I wasn't living with them. Thanks a lot!
At the beginning I was a little unsure on how would I behave when living with a German family. It has been a long time since I played a computer game, but with Steffen I discovered that there are some good games. I also learned that I could play for the first time with the Wii and win.
The differences between our cultures are not very sharp. May be we, Latinamericans, speak a lot and it is hard for us to make silence. But apart from that, there aren't many differences.
One thing I did learn it is that I speak a lot about Areco, because I like to show photos and speak about something that it cannot be found in Germany.
After this experience, I feel that I'm really submerged in the German culture and I realized that during the course I was in a box with 50 students. I have improved my German, however I still don't understand everything which is said in a conversation and I have difficulties to gasp the topic of a conversation.
Now I would like to have the opportunity to work side by side with Germans. I'm a little sad because these two weeks have ended, but I'm curious about what it is waiting for me in Munich.
The trip has gone all right, the train had only 6 minutes of delay. When I arrived at the main station, I bought a ticket but I was unable to activate it, so I travelled without paying in the underground. What a good start!
