Oktoberfest 2010

5,7 Million visitants drunk this year 6,5 Million litres of beer. Although this could be the most interesting statistic of the festival, there is another aspect which is quite unknown: only 26 of the 42 hectare which has the Theresienwiese are used. In the rest of the place there is a amusement park. The Oktoberfest is a family event.
The festival starts on the first Saturday with a Wiesnwirte procession with festively decorated carriages from the breweries. This tradition began in 1879 when one of the owner of a beer stand drove his carriage to the Theresienwiese to advertise his brand.
One day later there is a huge parade with hundreds of people wearing dirndl dresses or lederhosen breeches. At the end, the mayor opens the first barrel of beer and dedicates the first Maß to the Oktoberfest and to the city. After that the crowds invade the festival during the three weeks. Locals go to the festival on work days, while foreigners tend to arrive on weekends like Italians, who come during the penultimate Weekend.
I'm impressed how this festival can attract so much people. It is the most popular event of Germany and it very simple in its nature. There are no traditional dances, games or other typical bavarian activities except for the costumes.
To sum up, it a simple celebration with an amazing worldwide success which I don't know where it comes from.

The Isar river

I live just 10 minutes away from the Isar, the river that runs along the heart of Munich. On sunny days Germans like to sunbath at its banks.
